Description Fiber Cement Board
Fiber cement board offers high impact strength, durability, and easy installation.
Handling and Installation: Fiber cement cladding is heavy and requires two people to carry uncut sheets. Thin fiber cement cladding is delicate before installation and must be handled with care to avoid chipping or breakage. Once cut, installation typically requires two people: one to hold the sheet against the studwork and the other to nail it into place.
Cutting Fiber Cement Sheeting:
- Scoring and Snapping: Thinner sheets can be cut using a heavy-duty cutting blade.
- Fibro Cutter: A hand- or electric-powered tool designed specifically for fiber cement.
- Mechanical Saw: A diamond (masonry) blade is needed for cutting thicker and denser sheets.
Installation Tips: Leave a 5-millimeter (0.2 in) gap between end-joints to be filled with caulking designed for fiber cement siding. Use metal 150 mm × 150 mm (6 in × 6 in) step flashing behind overlapping seams to prevent water damage. Secure the sheets with hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails.
Safety Note: Proper ventilation is necessary when cutting fiber cement siding to avoid inhaling silica dust, which can cause silicosis.
Finishing: Fiber cement cladding can be painted or stained before or after installation. For exposed areas, use weatherproof paint. After installation, cover joints with timber battens and paint the entire wall surface.
